Cu Chi and the Tunnels
On the way back from Tay Ninh we stopped at Cu Chi to see the tunnels. There is a place in Cu Chi with restaurant, Gift shop and rest rooms. Our guide takes us out into the woods and tells us about the tunnels. As he speaks about the Viet Cong he sounds like we might when talking about George Washington at Valley Forge. These are the heros. The revolutionaries who faced danger, hardship, and sacrificed much to free their country. I have no ill will towards the VC however this takes a little getting used to.
Our guide is Mr Vinh who was in the US Coast Guard during the war. He spent time in Philadelphia and New York.
There is an opportunity to fire an AK47. The cost is \\$1.00 per bullet.

M42
We come across an M42 Tank. We are told it was stopped by a land mine made from an unexploded US artillery shell. We are also told that many tanks were burried when destroyed to deny the enemy anything they might salvage and that farmers would find these, long after the war, dig them up, and sell them for scrap metal.
Tunnel Entrance
Only the smallest of the group can fit in to this original entrance to the tunnel system.
Booby Trap
There is a display of booby traps. This is one of them. Once again there is much pride in the ingenuity of the Viet Cong.
Tunnel Entrance
This is an entrance to an enlarged tunnel. This gives westerners a chance to get a feel of being underground. It is just a small feel though. The tunnel gives clearance and we can crawl on our hands and knees. The original was small enough that the VC had to crawl on their bellies. There were no lights and they crawled for up to 5 hours with the ground shaking from bombs. At the end of our short crawl Sarah and I agreed that you had to want something very badly to do that.
Enlarged Tunnel
We were 10 feet down and going down another level when I took this picture. This is where I met Sarah who is from Redding England. I am from Pipersville Pennsylvania in the USA and this is where we meet, 10 feet underground in a Viet Cong tunnel. Fascinating.
